Doxycycline 100mg

Doxycycline's authorized uses differ between countries and individual products.

• United States: Current doxycycline hyclate labeling includes rickettsial infections, selected sexually transmitted infections, respiratory infections, specific bacterial infections, some ophthalmic infections, anthrax post-exposure treatment, selected infections when penicillin cannot be used, severe acne as adjunctive therapy, acute intestinal amebiasis as adjunctive therapy, and malaria prophylaxis.

• United Kingdom: A current 100 mg capsule SmPC lists respiratory, urinary, sexually transmitted, skin, ophthalmic and rickettsial infections, along with several other specified infections and malaria prophylaxis.

• Canada: Health Canada lists marketed 100 mg doxycycline hyclate capsule and tablet products; the Canadian product monograph covers susceptible bacterial infections and provides product-specific dosing.

• Australia: The TGA register confirms authorized 100 mg doxycycline hyclate oral products; the exact approved indications should be checked against the supplied Australian Product Information.

Doxycycline 100mg is not a universal once-daily dose. Regimens vary substantially by infection.

Take doxycycline exactly as prescribed and use adequate fluid when swallowing an oral capsule or tablet. Current UK guidance recommends swallowing capsules with plenty of water while sitting or standing and well before lying down, which helps reduce esophageal irritation.

• Take each dose at the prescribed time.

• Swallow the oral formulation with a full glass of water.

• Remain upright rather than taking it immediately before bed.

• If stomach irritation occurs, follow the supplied product instructions regarding food.

• Complete the prescribed course unless the prescriber changes the treatment.

Do not double a missed dose or extend antibiotic treatment without professional advice.

Common effects can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache and increased sensitivity to sunlight. Esophageal irritation can occur if the medicine is taken without sufficient water or immediately before lying down.

Important interaction considerations include:

• Antacids and mineral supplements containing calcium, magnesium, iron or zinc can reduce doxycycline absorption.

• Warfarin and other anticoagulants may require monitoring.

• Isotretinoin should not be combined with doxycycline because of the risk of intracranial hypertension; Canadian product information specifically lists this combination as contraindicated.

• Other medicines can interact, so provide the prescriber or pharmacist with a complete medication and supplement list.

Doxycycline can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid unnecessary or prolonged UV exposure and use protective clothing and appropriate sunscreen while taking it.

Practical points:

• Take the medicine with plenty of water.

• Do not lie down immediately after taking an oral dose.

• Separate doxycycline from iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc and antacid products according to the specific product instructions.

• Tell your healthcare professional about pregnancy, breastfeeding, liver disease, previous antibiotic reactions and all current medicines.

• Antibiotics should be used only when a bacterial infection is suspected or confirmed; unnecessary use contributes to antimicrobial resistance.

Doxycycline is a prescription antibiotic and should be used only for an appropriate bacterial infection or another established indication. It should not be used for viral infections such as influenza or ordinary colds. Using antibiotics unnecessarily can promote resistant bacteria.

Important warnings include photosensitivity, esophageal irritation or ulceration, severe diarrhea associated with Clostridioides difficile, hypersensitivity reactions and rare severe skin reactions. Current U.S. labeling was updated in 2025 to include severe skin reactions among the warnings.

Doxycycline is generally avoided during pregnancy unless a qualified clinician determines that treatment is necessary. It is also generally avoided in young children because of potential effects on developing teeth and bone, although current guidance recognizes specific situations in which doxycycline may be used when benefits outweigh risks.

Seek urgent medical attention for difficulty breathing, facial swelling, severe rash or blistering, severe headache or visual changes, persistent watery or bloody diarrhea, or other serious reactions.
