Covimectin 12mg Tablet

Covimectin 12mg is intended for selected parasitic infections. The appropriate use depends on the diagnosed parasite and applicable local treatment guidance.

• Intestinal strongyloidiasis: An established indication for oral ivermectin.

• Onchocerciasis: Used against microfilariae associated with river blindness caused by Onchocerca volvulus.

• Scabies: Oral ivermectin can be used under medical supervision; in the U.S., this is off-label. CDC guidance describes a weight-based regimen for classic scabies.

• COVID-19: Ivermectin is not FDA-approved or authorized for prevention or treatment of COVID-19.

Ivermectin acts primarily on susceptible parasites by binding to glutamate-gated chloride channels in their nerve and muscle cells. This increases chloride-ion permeability and disrupts normal neuromuscular activity, resulting in paralysis and death of susceptible parasites. Its effects vary according to the parasite and life stage. For example, ivermectin reduces microfilariae in onchocerciasis but does not kill adult Onchocerca volvulus worms.

The 12 mg tablet strength does not determine an individual's dose. U.S. ivermectin labeling provides weight-based dosing tables using 3 mg tablets. Treatment decisions depend on body weight, infection, age, medical history and other medicines. Do not calculate, repeat or increase the dose without professional advice. Labeled strongyloidiasis and onchocerciasis treatment is taken on an empty stomach with water.

• Take Covimectin exactly as prescribed for the diagnosed infection.

• For U.S.-labelled strongyloidiasis or onchocerciasis treatment, take ivermectin on an empty stomach with water.

• For oral ivermectin used for classic scabies, CDC guidance recommends taking the dose with food to increase bioavailability.

• Do not substitute veterinary ivermectin products for human tablets.

• Follow any recommended clinical or laboratory follow-up, particularly after treatment for strongyloidiasis.

Possible adverse effects include:

• Dizziness or light-headedness

• Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea

• Abdominal discomfort

• Headache, weakness or fatigue

• Drowsiness or tremor

• Rash or itching

Ivermectin may interact with other medicines, so provide your complete medication list to your doctor or pharmacist. CDC also notes potential interactions with medicines including azithromycin, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole and cetirizine when considering oral ivermectin for scabies. Seek urgent medical attention for severe confusion, seizures, breathing difficulty, loss of consciousness or a serious allergic reaction.

Do not use ivermectin if you have a known hypersensitivity to ivermectin or an ingredient in the specific product. Safety and effectiveness have not been established in children weighing less than 15 kg. Pregnancy and breastfeeding require medical assessment before treatment. People with substantial exposure to Loa loa in West or Central Africa should tell their clinician before receiving ivermectin because serious neurological reactions can occur in heavily infected individuals.

Use particular care with other medicines that may interact with ivermectin, and tell the prescriber about anticoagulants and all prescription, non-prescription and herbal products. For onchocerciasis, inflammatory reactions can occur as microfilariae die.

The product packaging identifies Covimectin-12 as a prescription ivermectin tablet and instructs use according to physician direction. Do not take excessive doses and do not use veterinary ivermectin formulations in humans. Ivermectin should not be used as an unapproved treatment or preventive measure for COVID-19.
