Ciplox 250mg Tablet is a prescription antibacterial medicine containing ciprofloxacin 250mg. Ciprofloxacin belongs to the fluoroquinolone antibiotic class and is used for selected infections caused by bacteria that are susceptible to ciprofloxacin. Depending on the infection, bacterial susceptibility and local treatment guidelines, ciprofloxacin may be prescribed for selected urinary tract infections (UTIs), skin and skin-structure infections, bone and joint infections, complicated intra-abdominal infections, infectious diarrhea, typhoid fever, chronic bacterial prostatitis and certain lower respiratory tract infections.
Ciplox should not be used for viral illnesses such as the common cold or influenza. Antibiotics should be used only when bacterial infection is proven or strongly suspected, because unnecessary or inappropriate antibiotic use contributes to antimicrobial resistance.
Ciprofloxacin works by inhibiting two important bacterial enzymes: DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II) and topoisomerase IV. These enzymes are needed for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair and recombination. Blocking them produces a bactericidal effect against susceptible organisms.
Ciplox 250mg should be taken exactly as prescribed by a healthcare professional. Ciprofloxacin tablets may generally be taken with or without food and should be swallowed whole with adequate fluids. Ciprofloxacin should not be taken at the same time as certain products containing magnesium, aluminum, calcium, iron or zinc. Milk, yogurt or calcium-fortified juice should not be used alone to take the tablet, although ciprofloxacin may be taken with a meal that contains dairy.
Common adverse effects include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and rash. More serious fluoroquinolone risks include tendinitis or tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy and central nervous system effects; ciprofloxacin can also worsen muscle weakness in people with myasthenia gravis.
