Cerazette 75mcg Tablet is an oral hormonal contraceptive containing desogestrel 75 micrograms (0.075mg). It belongs to the progestogen-only pill (POP) category and does not contain estrogen. Its established therapeutic indication is contraception, or prevention of pregnancy.
Unlike many traditional progestogen-only pills, Cerazette prevents pregnancy primarily by inhibiting ovulation. It also increases the viscosity of cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to pass through the cervix.
Because Cerazette does not contain estrogen, it may be suitable for some people who cannot or do not want to use an estrogen-containing contraceptive. Progestogen-only contraception may also be used during breastfeeding when medically appropriate.
Cerazette is normally taken once every day at approximately the same time, continuously without a tablet-free break. After finishing one 28-tablet pack, the next pack is started the following day.
Consistent timing is particularly important. With a desogestrel pill, contraceptive protection is generally maintained when the tablet is taken within the accepted 12-hour late window; if it is taken later than that, additional contraceptive precautions may be required. Exact backup-contraception instructions can vary between product/regional guidance, so the leaflet supplied with the actual Cerazette pack or advice from a clinician/pharmacist should be followed.
One of the most noticeable effects of Cerazette can be a change in menstrual bleeding pattern. Bleeding may become irregular, more frequent, less frequent or may stop altogether. In clinical data, bleeding irregularity was the most commonly reported effect.
Other commonly reported adverse effects include headache, nausea, acne, mood changes, breast pain, decreased libido and weight increase.
Cerazette does not protect against HIV or other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Barrier protection such as condoms is required when STI protection is needed.
Certain medicines and herbal products can reduce contraceptive effectiveness by increasing hormone metabolism. Examples listed in prescribing information include carbamazepine, phenytoin, rifampicin, rifabutin, topiramate and St. John’s wort, among others. Patients should therefore disclose all medicines and supplements to their healthcare professional.
