Cabgolin Tablet (Cabergoline) is a prescription medicine containing cabergoline, an ergot-derived dopamine receptor agonist with high affinity for dopamine D2 receptors. Sun Pharma currently lists Cabgolin tablets in 0.25mg and 0.5mg strengths in India.
Cabergoline is primarily used for the treatment of hyperprolactinemic disorders, where the level of the hormone prolactin in the blood is abnormally high. This may occur without an identifiable cause or because of a prolactin-secreting pituitary adenoma.
High prolactin can interfere with normal reproductive and hormonal function. Depending on the individual, hyperprolactinemia may be associated with menstrual disturbances, infertility, inappropriate breast-milk production, reduced libido or other hormone-related symptoms. Cabergoline lowers prolactin by activating dopamine D2 receptors on pituitary lactotroph cells, which directly suppresses prolactin secretion.
Treatment response is usually assessed by measuring serum prolactin levels. Current prescribing information recommends checking prolactin periodically and adjusting treatment according to clinical response and tolerability.
Cabgolin should be taken exactly as prescribed by a healthcare professional. Current cabergoline labeling states that the tablets may be taken with or without food. The appropriate strength, frequency and duration depend on the patient's prolactin level, diagnosis, response and safety profile.
Common adverse reactions include nausea, headache and dizziness. Constipation, fatigue, postural or orthostatic hypotension, indigestion and vomiting can also occur.
Cabergoline also has important, less-common safety risks involving heart-valve disease and fibrotic disorders. Current prescribing information recommends cardiovascular assessment, including echocardiographic evaluation for valvular disease, before treatment and appropriate monitoring during therapy.
Patients should also report unusual new compulsive behaviors such as uncontrollable gambling, spending, binge eating or increased sexual urges, because dopamine agonists including cabergoline can rarely cause impulse-control disorders.
