Azithromycin is selected when the suspected or confirmed bacteria are susceptible to the antibiotic. Documented uses include:

• Respiratory infections, including certain community-acquired bacterial respiratory infections.

• Ear, nose and throat infections, depending on the diagnosis and local prescribing guidance.

• Skin and skin-structure infections caused by susceptible organisms.

• Certain sexually transmitted infections, including specific chlamydial infections.

• Some pediatric indications, such as acute otitis media and community-acquired pneumonia, are included in U.S. labeling.

Azithromycin belongs to the macrolide antibiotic class. It acts mainly by binding to the bacterial 50S ribosomal subunit and interfering with protein synthesis. This inhibits the growth and multiplication of susceptible bacteria.

Azithromycin also remains in tissues for an extended period, which supports once-daily and relatively short treatment regimens for several infections. The 250mg strength is therefore often used as part of an infection-specific regimen rather than as a universal standalone dose.

The appropriate regimen depends on the infection, age, weight, liver function, other medicines and local prescribing recommendations. A 250mg tablet should not be taken simply because the strength is available.

Take Azax according to the prescription and try to take it at the same time each day. Swallow the tablet with water and complete the prescribed course unless a healthcare professional instructs you otherwise.

Food instructions can vary by product guidance: some Indian listings state that Azax can be taken with or without food, while NHS guidance advises taking azithromycin tablets at least 1 hour before food or 2 hours after eating. Follow the instructions supplied with the specific pack you receive.

If a dose is missed, follow the missed-dose instructions from your prescriber or pharmacist rather than automatically doubling the next dose.

Common effects of azithromycin can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort and changes in taste. These are generally mild, but persistent or troublesome symptoms should be assessed.

Important precautions include:

• Heart-rhythm medicines: Azithromycin can prolong the QT interval and increase the risk of serious arrhythmias in susceptible patients.

• Antacids: Aluminum- or magnesium-containing antacids may require separation from azithromycin according to the applicable product instructions.

• Warfarin and digoxin: Tell the prescriber or pharmacist about these medicines because monitoring or medication review may be required.

• Other QT-prolonging medicines: The combined effect can increase cardiac risk.

• Liver-affecting medicines: A medication review is important in people with previous liver disease or abnormal liver function.

Do not use Azax if you have had a serious allergic reaction to azithromycin, erythromycin or another macrolide antibiotic. Tell your healthcare professional if you have previously developed liver problems or jaundice while taking azithromycin. Current prescribing information also warns about QT prolongation and potentially serious abnormal heart rhythms, particularly in people with existing rhythm disorders, prolonged QT, low potassium or magnesium, slow heart rate, or concurrent QT-prolonging medicines.

Stop and seek prompt medical attention for signs of a severe allergic reaction, fainting or significant palpitations, severe skin reactions, or symptoms suggesting liver injury such as yellow skin or eyes and dark urine. Severe or persistent diarrhea during or after antibiotic treatment should also be medically assessed because antibiotic-associated C. difficile diarrhea can occur.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, significant liver disease, heart-rhythm problems and use in children should be discussed with a qualified healthcare professional. Do not use Azax for viral infections or share leftover antibiotics.
