Aldactone 25mg Tablet (Spironolactone 25mg) is a prescription medicine containing spironolactone 25mg, an aldosterone antagonist and potassium-sparing diuretic. It is used in selected patients to manage conditions involving excess fluid, elevated blood pressure or excessive aldosterone activity.
Aldactone may be prescribed as part of the treatment of heart failure, as add-on therapy for high blood pressure (hypertension), for certain types of edema or fluid retention, and for primary hyperaldosteronism, a condition in which the body produces excessive aldosterone. Its suitability and dose depend on the patient's condition, kidney function, potassium level and other medicines.
Spironolactone works by blocking the effects of aldosterone at aldosterone-sensitive sites in the kidneys. Aldosterone normally promotes sodium and water retention while increasing potassium excretion. By antagonizing aldosterone, spironolactone increases the excretion of sodium and water while reducing potassium loss, which is why it is classified as a potassium-sparing diuretic.
Through this mechanism, Aldactone can help reduce fluid buildup and swelling, support blood-pressure control and contribute to appropriate heart-failure treatment. In patients with primary hyperaldosteronism, spironolactone directly counteracts excessive aldosterone activity.
Aldactone 25mg should be taken exactly as prescribed by a healthcare professional. Spironolactone may be taken with or without food, but it should be taken consistently in relation to meals because food affects its absorption. A 25mg tablet is not automatically the correct daily dose for every patient or every indication.
An important safety consideration with spironolactone is hyperkalemia (high blood potassium). Kidney function and serum potassium may therefore need monitoring, particularly after starting treatment or changing the dose. The risk can increase with impaired kidney function, potassium supplements, potassium-containing salt substitutes and certain medicines that also raise potassium.
Possible adverse effects include dizziness, low blood pressure, gastrointestinal symptoms, electrolyte abnormalities and gynecomastia (breast enlargement or tenderness in males). Patients should contact their healthcare professional if they develop significant weakness, abnormal heartbeat, fainting or other concerning symptoms.
