Amoxycillin Capsule

Amoxycillin is used when a susceptible bacterial infection is diagnosed or strongly suspected. The exact choice depends on the organism, infection site and local resistance patterns.

• Respiratory infections: selected lower respiratory and upper respiratory bacterial infections.

• Ear, nose and throat infections: including appropriate bacterial ear, throat or sinus infections.

• Urinary infections: selected susceptible genitourinary infections.

• Skin and soft-tissue infections: when caused by susceptible organisms.

• H. pylori infection: used with other medicines as part of specific eradication regimens.

It should not be used simply because symptoms resemble a bacterial infection. Unnecessary antibiotic treatment can cause adverse effects and contributes to antimicrobial resistance.

The appropriate amoxycillin dose depends on the infection, age, weight, kidney function, severity and susceptibility of the causative organism.

For adults, the NHS lists a usual capsule dose of 250 mg to 500 mg three times daily for many infections. U.S. prescribing information uses different indication-specific schedules and recommends dose adjustment in severe renal impairment. These are general label/guideline examples, not an individualized prescription.

Children generally require weight-based dosing and may be given an oral suspension rather than capsules. Follow the exact dose and duration prescribed for the infection.

Do not substitute a 250 mg capsule for a 500 mg capsule, or change dosing frequency, without professional instructions.

Common adverse effects include:

• Nausea

• Diarrhoea

• Skin rash

• Occasionally vomiting or other gastrointestinal discomfort

Most reactions are mild, but serious reactions can occur. Amoxicillin can cause allergic reactions, including potentially life-threatening anaphylaxis, particularly in people with previous serious penicillin allergy.

Severe or persistent diarrhoea can sometimes indicate antibiotic-associated colitis and requires medical assessment. A rash after amoxicillin can also have different causes; people with glandular fever may be particularly prone to developing a rash while taking amoxicillin.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines you take before starting amoxycillin.

• Penicillin or beta-lactam allergy: previous serious allergic reactions require particular caution and may make amoxicillin unsuitable.

• Warfarin and other oral anticoagulants: monitoring may be needed because antibiotics can affect anticoagulation in some patients.

• Allopurinol: concurrent use can increase the likelihood of rash.

• Probenecid: can alter amoxicillin concentrations and is not recommended with some labeled formulations.

• Kidney impairment: dose or dosing interval may need adjustment when renal function is significantly reduced.

Amoxicillin can also affect certain laboratory tests. Always tell healthcare professionals that you are taking it when blood or urine testing is planned.

Do not use amoxycillin if you have previously experienced a serious hypersensitivity reaction to amoxicillin, penicillin or another relevant beta-lactam antibiotic unless a qualified clinician has specifically assessed the situation. Severe allergic reactions can involve facial or throat swelling, breathing difficulty, wheezing, dizziness or collapse and require emergency treatment.

Tell your healthcare professional if you have kidney or liver problems, a history of antibiotic-associated colitis, glandular fever, or previous antibiotic allergies. Amoxicillin can cause diarrhoea, and severe or bloody diarrhoea during or after treatment needs prompt medical evaluation.

Use amoxycillin only for a bacterial infection for which it is appropriate. It will not treat viral respiratory infections, and unnecessary antibiotic exposure can promote resistant bacteria.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding should be discussed with a healthcare professional, although amoxicillin is commonly used when clinically indicated. Children require age- and weight-appropriate dosing. Do not share leftover antibiotics with another person or save them for a future illness.

Seek urgent medical care for signs of anaphylaxis, severe skin reactions, breathing difficulty, collapse, or severe/persistent diarrhoea.
